What is Cub Scouting?                   
 
∙    Over two million boys nationwide participate in Cub Scouts.  
∙   Activities include camping, games, swimming, archery, field trips, nature experiences, and making and racing pinewood derby cars. 
∙    Encourages boys to strive for their personal best; a lesson that will help them achieve success throughout his lifetime. 
∙    For boys who are in the first through fifth grades. 
∙    Family­centered, year­round program that teaches positive life skills, values, and attitudes.  
∙    Cub Scout activities encourage character development, build citizenship, and promote personal fitness.  
∙    Previous Scouting experience is not required. 
 
What Is a Den?      
 
Small groups by grade level.  Activities in these dens are age appropriate: 

 

Kindergarten is Lion Cubs—Boys and girls with and adult partner (usually a parent or guardian). This is their entry into scouting. Boys and girls along with their adult partners work on age appropriate activities. 
 
First Grade Is Tiger Cubs—Boys and girls join with an adult partner (usually a parent or guardian).  Boys and girls with their adult partners go on exciting field trips while learning about their family, town, health, communication, and the outdoors. 
 
Second Grade Is Wolf Cubs— These boys and girls work through achievements while learning and doing projects in the home and community.  They learn about safety, our flag, woodworking, collecting, environmental protection, healthy eating, and much more. 
 
Third Grade Is Bear Cubs— These boys and girls learn about wildlife, conservation, knot tying, American folklore, astronomy, nature crafts, magic, swimming safety, and more.

Fourth and Fifth Grade Is Webelos—These older boys and girls do more in­depth activities and study, while having tons of fun, by earning 20 Activity pins/badges in 5 categories: Mental Skills (Artist, Scholar, Showman, Traveler); Technology (Handyman, Craftsman, Engineer, Scientist); Physical Skills (Aquanaut, Athlete, Fitness, Sportsman); Community (Citizen, Communicator, Family Member, Readyman); and, Outdoor Skills( Forester, Geologist, Naturalist, Outdoorsman, , They can earn Cub Scouting’s highest award, Arrow of Light, followed by graduation to BSA Scouts in the Spring.  
 
What Is a Pack? 
∙    These small groups make up a pack.  
∙    Family members volunteer to help run the dens and pack.  
∙    Pack meetings are held once a month where boys and girls are recognized for their achievements. 
∙    It’s fun for the entire family; Pack meetings are built on a monthly theme. 
 
How Do Parents Participate? 
∙    Parents attend den and pack meetings and work with their child/ren on home­based projects and activities.  
∙    Parents participate in planning, leading, and implementing the den and pack activities and being part of the community of families. 
 
 
What Fun Activities Await You and Your Child? 
 
Field Trips—East Bay Regional Parks, and various community locations, you name it! 
 
Pinewood Derby— Cub scouts participate in the annual Pinewood Derby where the boys and girls make and race cars made from a block of pinewood in the spring. These miniature cars race on a 30’­ 40’ gravity track and are tons of fun for the boys and their parents. 
Camping, Hiking, and Cookouts—There is no better way to build lasting family memories than in the outdoors. Many adults speak of how they remember camping opportunities with their parents and friends. Also, activities such as spending the night on a submarine or an aircraft carrier are wonderful, educational, and fun.  
 
Cub Scout Summer Day Camp—Mt. Diablo Silverado Council runs some of the best Cub Scout camps around. They are a week­long, affordable and packed with activities and fun. Boys and girls come home tired and excited. Many have told us how they can’t wait for the next day to go back to camp. It is not uncommon for boys and girls to attend more than one camp in the summer, and some go to all of them!  
 
Community Service Projects—Every year Scouts everywhere participate in over 30,000 hours of service projects and collected over 53,000 pounds of food for the Contra Costa Food Bank. 
Cub Scouts are part of this giving back to the community. 
Much More—The activities are endless and are only bounded by the imaginations of the boys and their leaders. Opportunities to discover the resources of the Bay Area are wonderful and boundless.

∙    $36 is paid to register with Boy Scouts of America and there is an anndual $150 dues that will cover most activities.  
∙    The Scout shop in Pleasant Hill is where you can purchase any uniforms, patches, books, and materials needed for you and your son
